Francisco, Apple’s Steve Jobs today announced a July 11th launch date for the new 3G iPhone. In doing so he also confirmed the rumors floating about that it would be just $199 for an 8GB iPhone.
It was also confirmed that the new iPhone would have built in A-GPS, which uses cell towers to supplement the GPS satellite system. The 3G technology will, according to Apple, allow the new iPhone to load pages up to 36 percent faster than the N95 and the Treo. Battery life will not suffer with all the new bells and whistles; it allows for 300 hours of standby, 8 - 10 hours of 2G talk and 5 of 3G, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. The new iPhone is slightly thicker at 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.48 inches, and weighs 4.7 ounces. It operates on Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), UMTS / HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz), GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) and has Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. The iPhone 2.0 will also come with Apple’s new MobileMe service, which provides push email. On a disappointing note however, no mention was made of MMS, video capture or built in iChat.
The iPhone is slated to debut in 22 countries including the U.S., U.K., Canada, France and Germany. It should be available in another 50 or so countries by the end of the year. A 16GB model will be available for $299 and will be available in white or black.”
